ISRAEL - In July 2017, a study from Ditch the Label showed that 69% of young people admitted to have done something abusive to someone online. The release of this app couldn’t have been more timely: the same month saw the pilot release of child safety app Keepers, which uses AI to detect cyberbullying on social networks and alert their parents. The app screens messages sent across all social media platforms on a child’s phone for hateful or offensive language, using an algorithm developed by clinical psychologists. Keepers sends a notification to parents when it spots malicious messages.

Now we’re talking. A natural language AI with a higher purpose than a chatbot! And while traditional protection apps struggle to capture the nuance and rapidly evolving nature of children’s messages, Keepers’ application of machine learning will enable it to detect the emotion and tone of messages, while supercharging parents’ abilities and peace of mind. The bigger picture here? As we keep repeating: the most compelling applications of technology are never really about technology. They’re about serving basic human needs!
