Located in rural India, the goal of the Riverbend School is to teach children how to be happy - rather than offering a standardized curriculum.

The school is built around a central public plaza and also features an ideation lab, a meditation room, and a test kitchen. Its aim is to foster and develop pupils’ social and emotional intelligence, rather than just their academic knowledge. Plans for the Riverbend School were unveiled this month.

We often talk about trends being rooted in basic needs. While happiness might be an elusive concept, it’s perhaps the most fundamental of human needs. And people increasingly expect that a range of non-traditional institutions will help them achieve happiness. So why not a school?

Furthermore, it’s not a huge surprise that it’s entrepreneurs, rather than educators, behind the Riverbend School. Unbound by the ‘rules’ of education, Riverbend’s founders aim to redefine what a school can deliver. So, if you’re feeling ambitious and want to challenge your team, use this as inspiration.

What about other institutions you feel are losing relevance in today’s world? And what might it look like if you, as an outsider, reimagined them?
