Health startup Ubenwa in Nigeria has developed an app that determines if a child has birth asphyxia without having to visit a doctor. The app uses AI to analyze the frequency and amplitude of infants’ cries within 10 seconds (Ubenwa means 'baby's cry'). Its founders have claimed accuracy rates of as high as 95 percent in trials. Birth asphyxia is the third-highest cause of death for children under five years old and can lead to neurological disabilities. The company is currently in the second round of the IBM Watson AI XPRIZE competition and plans to make the app free for institutions and individuals.

The healthcare industry is on the cusp of disruption, with hugely positive potential outcomes for patients. Ubenwa is a great example of that. But zoom out, and this innovation ticks many other trend boxes too: we hardly need to mention the basic human need it caters to, doing so via an innovative application of new technology. And like all the best trend-driven innovations, it’s undeniably ‘better’ – less invasive, faster and cheaper. And having seen it, you’re probably asking ‘what else could be instantly diagnosed by the phone in my hand?’

So, while your organization might not deal with such life and death situations on a daily basis, this example should inspire you to start 2018 on a positive note. What everyday technologies could you leverage to offer your customers solutions that are faster, cheaper and simply better?
